Winner to receive free entry fees and US$20,000 Travel Allowance
To Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs
LEXINGTON, Ky. (August 18, 2011)- Friday’s five furlong Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes (G1) at York’s Ebor Festival is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race with the winner receiving an automatic starting position into the US$1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.
The Breeders’ Cup Challenge is a global series of 68 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions in a corresponding Breeders’ Cup World Championships race. The Breeders’ Cup will be held on November 4-5 in Louisville, Kentucky. The Turf Sprint will be run at 5 furlongs.
If the Coolmore Nunthorpe winner is nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program by Oct. 24, the Breeders’ Cup will pay for the US$30,000 in entry fees to start in the Turf Sprint and provide the winning stable a US $20,000 travel allowance to Churchill Downs. In addition, if the Breeders’ Cup Challenge winner was nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program as a foal, the foal nominator will receive a $10,000 breeder award from Breeders’ Cup Ltd.
The Coolmore Nunthorpe is for 2-year-olds and up. Chandler and Westwood's Hoof It (GB), supplemented to the Nunthorpe, brings an 8-for-17 career mark for trainer Michael Easterby. The 4-year-old son of Monsieur Bond (IRE) has won four of his last five starts, including the minor Blue Square Stewards' Cup at Goodwood July 30 and will look for his first career triumph at the group level in the Nunthorpe.
The Coolmore Nunthorpe is the second automatic qualifier for the Turf Sprint this year. In April, the undefeated mare Black Caviar won the Darley TJ Smith Stakes (G1) in Australia.
