THE PRESIDENT’S LUNCHEON 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE HORSE IN PANAMERICA COMMEMORATION OF FIRST LANDING OF IBERIAN HORSES AT ANTIGUA VERACRUZ, MEXICO ON APRIL 22, 1519. DECEMBER 4TH 2018, AAEP ANNUAL MEETING, SAN FRANCISCO,CALIFORNIA JEFFREY T. BERK , VMD ,MRCVS, AAEP PRESIDENT CHRONICLE OF HARRY W. WERNER, VMD, CHAIRMAN AND SPEAKER OF AAEP PANAMERICAN MEMBERS REPRESENTATIVES
“Thank you to Drs. Murga, Quijano, and Salinas for their hard work and creative efforts to remind us of and celebrate the remarkable and relatively short history of the modern horse in the Americas. A mere 501 years ago, there had been no horses in our hemisphere for 10,000 years. Eohippus , the predecessor of our modern horses ,originated in northern Mexico and North America 55 million years ago. Two million years ago Equus caballus our modern horse, appeared , only to then become extinct in our hemisphere 10,000 years ago as the last Ice Age destroyed all grass.
This coming April 22 will mark to the day the 500th. anniversary of the horses’ return as they disembarked onto the beaches of Vera Cruz. The 11 horses and 5 mares were the cavalry vanguard of Captain General Hernando Cortes and his conquistadors as they began their epic initiative to colonize Mexico, Central America and North America.
As one of Cortes’ conquistadors in the conquest of the Aztec Empire and an oft-wounded survivor of many battles, Bernal Diaz del Castillo documented his experiences. In his text TRUE HISTORY OF THE CONQUEST OF NEW SPAIN-HISTORIA VERDADERA DE LA CONQUISTA DE LA NUEVA ESPAÑA, he wrote “ After God, we owe the most to our horses during the conquest of Mexico”.
The return of the horse to Mexico on April 22, 1519 and further into Continental America is the final leg of a remarkable 55 million plus 500 years journey, a true milestone of world history and one that we-as the horse doctors- rightly celebrate today.
